About us
The National First Generation in Medicine Association aims to create a network comprising first-generation and low-income (FGLI) medical students, as well as physicians and faculty in medical schools who identify as such or support related efforts throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

Our Mission
Empowerment
The Association and the symposium will enable us to provide and share strategies to build a FGLI in medicine community at each medical school. We will identify common challenges faced by FGLI medical students across all medical schools, and we will work together to promote awareness and find solutions to these challenges. |
Community
We will form connections and build community among FGLI medical students. We will promote dialogue and establish collective goals, both for individual schools as well as for the FGLI in medicine network as a whole. |
Advocacy
We aim to challenge current paradigms in the medical profession and promote belonging and appreciation of FGLI trainees in the profession. We will share and establish strategies to promote recruitment and retention of FGLI trainees in medicine. We will mentor FGLI high school and undergraduate students to help foster interest in careers in medicine and/or research, and to further strengthen our FGLI community. |
